6 ~ Daniel

Knitting sucked. I mean it sucked. The only thing it was good for was immediately making me sleep. Something about cranking the handle and watching the loom spin was like white noise, and I would instantly fall asleep.

And kept doing it. Several times I’d relaxed and set it on my lap to work on the hat, and I was next to nowhere on progress besides getting a really great nap aid.

“Your secret is safe with me,” Hugh promised as I woke from another one, snuggled up against him on one of Rafe’s couches while he knitted.

“What?” I muttered, rubbing my eyes.

“That knitting bores you to tears and you have some ability that instantly makes you fall asleep if you try and do it.”

“It was an unknown ability,” I admitted, feeling bad I didn’t like something he did.

He just shrugged. “I could fall asleep doing laundry, it bores me that bad. You’re also recovering. I’d rather you catch more sleep that you obviously need than crank out a hat for someone else. I can show Norberto how to turn the crank if we need hats. The point was for you to relax.”

“I feel pretty relaxed right now,” I chuckled, staring up at him. “Was the movie good?”

“Yup. It’s about time to eat and take your pills.”

“How much time?” I asked, getting warm and fuzzy how he was so serious about taking good care of me, spoiling me really.

“About twenty minutes.”

“Want to make out?” I blurted, ready for what came next.

Apparently just not how to say it.

“Could you repeat that?” he asked, setting down whatever he was working on before looking at me.

I slowly pulled the blanket over my head and hid as my cheeks heated. “I’d rather not.”

“Can I assume I heard right and come in there with you?”

“Your advances would not be unwelcome,” I muttered, feeling like a total goober. I gasped as the blanket disappeared and Hugh replaced it, moving the blanket over him then. “Hi.”

“Hi,” he chuckled in that deep sort of way that I could feel from his chest and made me shiver. “Come here often?”

I burst out laughing, knowing he did it on purpose but seriously relieved he liked me enough to ignore when I was a dork. Even better, he always managed to make me feel better or figure out a way to break any tension.

“I love your laugh,” he admitted quietly, moving so he was leaning on his elbows, his knee between my legs so I didn’t have his full, massive body weight on me. “It’s not a giggle and not a chuckle but something in between and really unique that I know you always mean it.”

“Thanks,” I murmured, adoring how often he complimented me. The great thing about Hugh and how he blurted things out was he blurted things out. If he liked something or I looked nice, he always said it. “I like when you do that soft chuckle that I can feel in your chest. It’s super sexy like you have some secret and it might really be dirty.
